Babylonian Base-60 System Enabled Exact Fractions and 360-Degree Geometry — E8 Intelligence Research

Open access0 citations

Abstract

FINDING: Babylonian base-60 (sexagesimal) place-value system enabled exact representation of fractions and reciprocals, foundational for later astronomy and geometry. | MATH: Base-60 system; reciprocal pairs (e.g., 2 ↔ 30, 3 ↔ 20, 4 ↔ 15, 5 ↔ 12, 6 ↔ 10); 1/60 = 0.01666..., 1/3600 = 0.0002777...; 60 = 2² × 3 × 5 (highly composite number). | CONNECTION: Base-60 directly yields 360 degrees in a circle (6 × 60), enabling division of circle into 6 × 60 = 360°; 60 minutes/degree, 60 seconds/minute; 1/60 = 0.01666... approximates 0.01618 (1/Φ² ≈ 0.382/Φ? No direct link). However, 60's factors (2,3,5) relate to Platonic solid symmetries (tetrahedron, octahedron, icosahedron). | DEPTH: 8 — Fundamental to all later trigonometry, astronomy, and time measurement; not directly harmonic ratio, but enables exact rational approximations. FINDING: Cuneiform tablets (e.g., Plimpton 322) contain Pythagorean triples (a² + b² = c²) centuries before Pythagoras, with systematic generation. | MATH: Plimpton Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
