A Resilient Hybrid Power Management Strategy for Telecom Centers: Technical and Economic Insights
Abstract
ABSTRACT The availability and efficient utilization of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) play a crucial role in modern energy planning, particularly for isolated and critical facilities. In this context, Hybrid Energy Systems (HES), which integrate multiple energy sources, have emerged as a reliable solution to enhance system resilience and reduce environmental impacts. This study presents the design, optimization, and simulation of a standalone hybrid energy system composed of solar photovoltaic (PV), wind turbines, battery storage, and a diesel generator to supply a telecommunications center with a daily electrical demand of 80 kWh and a peak load of 7.5 kW, operating fully isolated from the public utility grid. To achieve this, MATLAB/Simulink was employed to model and analyze the system performance under local climatic conditions. Among the investigated configurations, the PV–Wind–Diesel–Battery system achieved the lowest Net Present Cost (NPC) of 251,130 USD and a Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) of 0.904 USD/kWh, thereby demonstrating superior economic performance and reduced reliance on fossil fuel generation. Furthermore, real‐time validation using OPAL‐RT confirmed the accuracy of the simulation results and the practical feasibility of the proposed system, highlighting its potential for reliable and sustainable power supply in remote telecommunication applications.
