Projective Identification as a Bidirectional and Recursive Process of the Relational Field

Abstract

The present paper traces the development of the concept of projective identification within the theory of the Combinatorial Dynamics of the Narcissistic Spectrum of Positions. Projective identification is defined as a primary and ongoing form of unconscious somatopsychic communication through which a person's state acquires relational direction, is felt within the shared field, and mobilizes the Other's somatopsychic participation. The process concerns the entire range of human states: fear, aggression, shame, and panic, as well as safety, desire, vitality, trust, and creative concentration.The further development of the theory shifts projective identification from a unidirectional model of transmission toward a bidirectional and recursive process of the Relational Field. In an actual relationship, both participants project simultaneously. Each participant enters the encounter with their own somatopsychic state, personal history, active Positions, Aspects of the Self, unconscious phantasies, defenses, expectations, and narcissistic rhythm. Neither participant is a neutral container for the other's projection. Each functions simultaneously as a source of projection, a recipient of the Other's projection, and a transformer of what circulates in the relationship.Projection and identification are distinct yet inseparable dimensions of the same process. Projection refers to the relational direction of a somatopsychic state. Identification refers to the form taken by the Other's somatopsychic participation in that state. The possibility, extent, quality, and form of identification depend on the characteristics of the projection, the Other's somatopsychic organization, and the encounter between the two simultaneous projective directions. The response that emerges is neither a copy nor a simple return of an initial state. It is a new, co-created somatopsychic form that alters the shared field and initiates the next phase of the microtemporal cycle.The new formulation connects projective identification with the Combinatorial Dynamics of Positions, the processing interval, containment, the Third Space, countertransference, and the Babel Phenomenon.
