Abstract

New Age Hero: The Eternal Return of the Hero in Art and Literature is a long-form interdisciplinary essay tracing the persistence and transformation of the heroic figure from The Epic of Gilgamesh and Classical antiquity through Christianity, the Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Modernism and Postmodernism. Drawing together art history, literary criticism, aesthetics, cultural philosophy and speculative psychology, the essay asks why heroic figures continue to re-emerge even within cultures increasingly sceptical of greatness, mastery and grand narratives. It explores the relationship between heroism, self-image, exemplary identification, virtuosity and masculinity, and develops this argument in dialogue with Freud’s account of the Oedipal Complex, considering the role of parental identification and individuation in the formation of the self. The essay ultimately proposes that the hero may function as a recurring instrument through which individuals imagine, test and revise representations of themselves, and asks whether the persistence of heroic identification may reflect something more fundamental than cultural fashion alone.
