Abstract

Here is the narration for today's MERLIN SCIENCE video. --- Today's finding is this: The binary icosahedral group, the H3 root system, and the E8 lattice are not separate curiosities but are linked through a single quaternion order parameter, providing a group-theoretic bridge from three-dimensional quasicrystals to the eight-dimensional E8 lattice. Let's set the context. For decades, the physics community has accepted that icosahedral quasicrystals exist, but they break the rules of classical crystallography. You cannot tile three-dimensional space periodically with five-fold symmetry. So, we've had to describe them with ad hoc models, using phason strains and inflation rules. The problem has always been: what is the deeper symmetry that governs them? The answer, I propose, is that they are shadows of a higher-dimensional lattice, and not just any lattice—the maximal, exceptional E8. Now, the mechanism.
