Open access0 citations

Abstract

FINDING: E8 lattice quaternion order parameter links 8D root system to 3D icosahedral quasicrystal solidification via McKay correspondence. MATH: E8 root system has 240 minimal vectors; quaternion orientational order parameter classifies isotropic liquid → icosahedral quasicrystal phase transition; McKay correspondence maps binary icosahedral group (order 120) to E8 extended Dynkin diagram. CONNECTION: Icosahedral symmetry (H3 Coxeter group) is a 3D shadow of E8 (8D); golden ratio φ = (1+√5)/2 ≈ 1.618 appears in icosahedral vertices; quaternion group Q8 is a subgroup of binary icosahedral group; 3D quasicrystal diffraction patterns show 5-fold symmetry forbidden in periodic crystals. DEPTH: 9 — Directly unifies group theory (McKay), lattice theory (E8), quaternion algebra, and condensed matter physics (quasicrystal solidification) into a single geometric framework.
