Perceived Distance and Normative Friction
Abstract
Perceived Distance and Normative Friction: A Threshold Theorem of Practical Alignment Between Normative Demand and Operative Practical Orientation develops a self-contained structural theorem for the practical alignment problem that arises when an actor sincerely affirms a normative demand while the conduct required by that demand remains displaced from the actor’s operative practical orientation. The paper distinguishes normative demand, operative practical orientation, perceived distance, normative friction, competing salience, effective burden, and carrying capacity as analytically separate elements. It then derives the Practical Alignment Threshold Theorem: within scope and with other relevant conditions held comparable, greater perceived distance does not reduce baseline normative friction; stronger competing salience does not reduce the effective burden of norm-congruent override; and stable norm-congruent override remains capacity-feasible only while effective burden remains within available carrying capacity. When effective burden exceeds available carrying capacity, the current override configuration is therefore insufficiently supported for stable practical alignment. Threshold exceedance does not by itself imply rejection of the norm, insincerity, moral disagreement, or any uniquely determined subsequent behaviour. Regression toward the operative practical orientation is instead specified as a separate conditional directional proposition. The paper further derives corollaries concerning declaration asymmetry, pressure sensitivity, and the relative character of the alignment threshold. The contribution is narrower than the established intention–behaviour gap and does not claim novelty for habit, automaticity, or the expression “normative friction.” Its distinct contribution is a capacity-relative threshold account of how perceived mismatch, normative friction, competing salience, and finite carrying capacity jointly constrain the practical sustainability of norm-congruent conduct. The theorem was generated using Axiomatic and Synthetic Theory (AST), but the paper is intentionally self-contained. All substantive definitions, assumptions, order conditions, derivational steps, theorem commitments, and challenge conditions required to evaluate the argument are stated directly, allowing the theorem to be assessed independently of acceptance of AST as a general methodology.
