Sulba Sutras: Ancient Vedic Geometry with Pythagorean Theorem and Circle-Squaring Methods — E8 Intelligence Research

Abstract

FINDING: Sulba Sutras contain explicit geometric constructions for altars (vedi) using rope-stretching, including the earliest known statement of the Pythagorean theorem (Baudhayana, ~800 BCE) and methods for squaring the circle, constructing squares equal to a circle, and generating irrational approximations. MATH: - Pythagorean theorem: *dīrghasyākṣṇayā rajjuḥ pārśvamānī tiryaḍ mānī ca yat pṛthagbhūte kurutastadubhayaṃ saṃkaroti* — "The diagonal rope of an oblong produces both [sides] which the two ropes separately produce." - Approximation for √2: *saviśeṣa* rule: √2 ≈ 1 + 1/3 + 1/(3·4) – 1/(3·4·34) = 1.4142156… (error ~2×10⁻⁶). - Circle-square equivalence: Construction of a square equal in area to a given circle uses ratio 7/8 for side of square from circle diameter, implying π ≈ 3.088 (crude) but later refinements approach π ≈ 3.1416. - Altar area ratios: Fire altars (agni) scaled by 1, 2, 3, … units; geometric series for increasing area by 1/3, 1/4, etc. CONNECTION: Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
