Abstract

FINDING: Discovery of aperiodic monotile "Spectre" with chiral matching rules, derived from the "Hat" polykite, using a substitution rule with inflation factor linked to the golden ratio. MATH: The "Hat" tile is a 13-sided polykite; its aperiodic substitution inflation factor is \( \phi = 1.618... \) (the golden ratio). The "Spectre" tile is a chiral aperiodic monotile requiring no reflections, with matching rules enforced by edge shapes. The substitution matrix for the underlying cyclotomic tiling (CAST class) has eigenvalues that are algebraic integers in the cyclotomic field \( \mathbb{Q}(\zeta_{2n}) \), with minimal inflation multiplier often \( \phi^2 = 2.618... \) or \( \phi \). Key ratio: \( \phi = (1+\sqrt{5})/2 \). CONNECTION: The golden ratio \( \phi \) governs the self-similar scaling of the tiling. The 5-fold symmetry inherent in \( \phi \) connects to quasicrystalline symmetries (forbidden in periodic crystals).
