Public Perceptions of National Identity in Ethiopia: Addis Ababa as a Capital City Lens

Abstract

Using Addis Ababa as a capital city lens of larger national dynamics, this study examines how ordinary citizens perceive national identity through the lens of everyday nationalism. It has used a mixed-methods approach, including focus groups, interviews, and surveys. The findings reveal an Ethiopian identity that is both strong and uncertain. Citizens feel pride in their country while expressing discontent with institutions and governance. They distinguish the state as a political entity and the nation as a cultural community. Governance weaknesses, ethnic divisions, and economic hardships shape national identity, stressing the necessity of inclusive governance for unity in multiethnic societies.
