On Chronotope (On the Spatiotemporal Complex, or Chronotope / Programmatic Theses & Historical Essay, 1925)

Abstract

The theses of A. A. Ukhtomsky’s 1925 lecture On the Spatiotemporal Complex, or Chronotope represent an early attempt to apply the ideas of space-time associated with Minkowski and Einstein to the physiology of perception and behavior. Ukhtomsky considers the organism as a system that not only responds to a present stimulus but also forms expectations of forthcoming events. Key Propositions and Concepts: Reception at a Distance — perception of a future event through a preceding signal. Anticipation — the organism’s ability to anticipate and prepare a response. Interval → Distance → Object — transformation of a temporal sequence of events into a spatiotemporal structure of perception. Chronotope — the unity of space and time associated with the history of the system’s preceding states. Dominance and Directionality — organization of activity around a particular functional direction. Object as a Project of Reality — perception is formed as a testable hypothesis about an impending event. Correlation with the Buteyko Method: The concept of the chronotope may serve as an additional physiological framework for understanding the Buteyko Method: repeated respiratory stimuli and organismic responses form stable functional states, while changes in habitual breathing behavior are associated with a restructuring of directionality and subsequent responses. This makes it possible to view breathing practice not only as a change in an individual respiratory parameter, but also as a gradual modification of an established functional pattern.
