From Universality to Consciousness: Beyond the Skull, Into the World

Abstract

The world is universal; a life is not. Nowhere in the laws of nature is it written that “this pain is mine” or “this memory is yours.” Yet experience does not occur for the world in general. It appears in this body, after this history, in this present. This paper addresses the individuation gap that has remained behind the problem of phenomenality. The move that organizes everything else is to stop treating history as memory and start treating it as a causal path that forms the present. A history built through repeated exposure and coupling with the world organizes the present reception, action, and value of the same individual. When that individual acts, an independent consequence can additionally be credited to that action and redirect the subsequent history. These are two loops, not one, and the paper separates them throughout: existence in a world can lay down formative history without action, while action and its answer are what make that history answerable and owned. I call this the diachronic world-coupled theory of individuation. Historical state C is not a warehouse of past items. Within a short temporal window, the present R is read through C, and C is rewritten only when a difference from the world arises. The sharpest test of that move separates three ways a past can act on a present. Three models were matched for capacity, for post-learning output, and for the worlds they inhabited. Item retrieval could still recognize a stored object but could not say what that object meant in a novel present. An unbraked self-reinforcing loop amplified itself under exact repetition and stayed fixed on the old direction after the world reversed. Only trajectory reading — history read into the present, rewritten only by a world-derived difference — avoided strengthening under zero-difference repetition and generalized correction to the new present. Being read is not the same as being rewritten, and where the loop closes decides whether a memory supports a life or fixes it. Two further dissociations narrow what individuation is. As formation fold-back is continuously removed, the static richness of the state increases while historical effects on reception, credit, and re-formation collapse: individuation is not static complexity, stored information, or recurrence alone. A capacity-matched comparison then showed that fourcausal roles can be jointly necessary even when more than one final equation can read them. A 2×2 probe separated the two closures directly: formation fold-back increased history-sensitive reception and created order sensitivity, whereas exact-yoked return abolished W–world-map alignment even with a byte-identical return stream. In a reanalysis of public intracranial data, firing patterns specific to encoding history were selectively re-expressed within a ±25 ms window around co-ripples, but neither an effect of history calling a later window nor an automatic post-window increment in history was supported. This does not establish identity with the synthetic equations. It shows that neighboring design motifs — selective expression within a temporal window, inhibitory control of the window, error-dependent updating, and excessive reactivation — already exist in memory research. R, C, P, W, and world-return are not particles of consciousness. They are intervention- accessible joints: present reception, historical formation, current applicability, value- direction and action credit, and the independent answer of the world. The paper maps Nagel’s what-it-is-like, the temporality of Husserl and James, Zahavi’s for-me-ness, Merleau-Ponty’s embodied involvement with the world, and the biological value of Jonas and Di Paolo onto that one path. Consciousness is the aspect in which the path lives a world; will is the path’s closure of possibilities into action; soul is a slow, persistent yet revisable direction; and love is the most demanding case, in which that direction answers to the present and autonomy of a non-interchangeable other. The synthetic results establish a causal organization. Identifying that organization with the lived aspect is a further step, taken openly in §15 and §16 and defended by explanatory debt rather than by experiment.
