Behaviorally Free, Ontologically Determined: Consciousness and Decision as Self-Directed Modelling Residual in Quantum-Geometry Dynamics

Abstract

Quantum-Geometry Dynamics (QGD) admits no exception to bottom-up determinism: Axiomatic Localism establishes that every causal succession is exhaustively fixed by local preonic configuration. There is no causal slack and no abstract causal layer through which mental states, intentions, or decisions could exert an influence not already accounted for by ordinary preonic interaction. This paper asks how the subjective appearance of open, self-directed choice is compatible with absolute physical determinism. It argues the two are not merely compatible: the exact same lawful process that leaves no causal slack anywhere is also what generates every choice a complex structure makes. To resolve this, the paper imports a physical distinction established earlier in the QGD portfolio: a system can be behaviorally elementary without being ontologically elementary (such as when its internal degrees of freedom make no independent contribution to its response to external forces at accessible scales). Applied to agency, within a sufficiently complex, high-density preonic aggregate, internal processes construct a coarse-grained menu of reachable continuations. Because the deciding structure does not have access to its own exact preonic micro-state, it confronts a "self-directed modelling residual." This residual explains why a decision appears to the deciding structure as open and self-sourced, granting the system "behavioral freedom." If agency is real at the preonic level of description, its physical basis resides precisely in the structural complexity and self-referential dynamics of these high-density preonic aggregates, not in an indeterministic causal slack that the universe does not possess.
