The Embodied Relational Constructivist Self-Framework (ERCS): An Integrative Conceptual Framework for Developmental Psychology

Abstract

This theoretical review introduces the Embodied Relational Constructivist Self-Framework (ERCS), an integrative developmental framework linking constructivist, self-psychological, attachment-theoretical and embodied-cognition traditions. The paper is the first article in a planned two-part therapy and developmental psychology series. Article 1 develops the ERCS framework as a conceptual model of self-development; a companion article is planned to apply the framework to therapeutic factor integration across psychotherapy, theology and sociology. ERCS conceptualizes human development as a heuristic four-phase process in which embodied metaphors, relational experiences, constructivist schema formation and self-coherence jointly shape the ontogenesis of the self. The framework generates four incremental, in-principle falsifiable predictions (V1--V4), two of which are provisionally operationalized. The current v7 manuscript adds a governance and safety layer for measurement-based-care workflows, shared decision-making, digital/app/CDSS use and LLM/transcript-profile support, and situates ERCS against neighbouring embodied-relational and predictive-processing frameworks --- including a prediction-error reading of the constructivist dimension and a multitrait-multimethod blueprint for the still-missing measurement layer. It explicitly presents the integration as a theoretical and research-programmatic proposal, not as a validated clinical instrument. (i) Theoretical inputs: Jean Piaget's genetic constructivism, Heinz Kohut's self psychology, John Bowlby's attachment theory and George Lakoff's theory of embodied cognition; (ii) Integrative contribution: a four-dimensional ERCS architecture connecting embodied, relational, constructivist and self-coherence dimensions; (iii) Testable structure: four provisional predictions with evidence-level, workflow-ledger and validation-gate framing; (iv) Open bridge: empirical validation, measurement design and any clinical decision-support use remain future work and require human governance gates.
