3-2-1: Lift Off! Co-Planning Strategies When “There’s No Time!”
Abstract
Collaborative planning is both a High-Leverage Practice and evidence-based practice for inclusive education. However, co-teachers frequently cite a lack of time as the greatest barrier to effective collaboration and instructional impact. This article presents a practical, flexible framework to reduce the time and stress associated with co-planning by introducing three tiers of intentional collaboration: mega-planning, macro-planning, and micro-planning. These strategies help co-teachers at any level work smarter, not longer, by streamlining routines, clarifying roles, and preparing for instruction more efficiently. The approach supports proactive planning and quick adjustments, enabling co-teachers to maximize their shared expertise and better meet student needs. Included are templates, checklists, planning tools, and a five-minute debriefing guide to improve communication and reflection without overwhelming already busy schedules. With these user-friendly strategies and resources, co-teachers can stop struggling to find time and start using structured approaches that make collaboration more effective - and more impactful -for students. Keywords: co-teaching, co-planning, collaboration, inclusive instruction, mega-planning, macro-planning, micro-planning
