Applied Sport Psychology in Esports: Practical Implications and Future Research
Abstract
Although sport psychology’s relevance to esports is growing, applied research and best-practice guidance remain limited. To inform practical implications and future research directions, this commentary discusses the current state of research on applied sport psychology in esports. Practitioners may benefit from engaging early, clarifying roles, and staying informed about esports culture to develop effective, tailored interventions. By focusing on performance and psychological demands, sport psychologists can foster healthier, sustainable esports environments and support the well-being and success of players, coaches, and other staff. Future research should focus on understanding the specific cognitive, emotional, and social challenges that esports stakeholders experience and testing the effectiveness of targeted interventions. Overcoming barriers like scepticism and a lack of infrastructure will be essential to advancing applied sport psychology in this field. With continued research and professional development, practitioners can play a vital role in supporting esports players' mental well-being and success.
