Non-linear Cognition and Subjective Pain in Gifted Individuals: A Structural Framework for Understanding Maladaptation and Budding
Abstract
This paper presents a theoretical framework for structurally analyzing subjective distress that may be observed in gifted experience, not by reducing it to giftedness as an individual attribute itself, but through relationships among cognitive processing, evaluative criteria, metacognition, knowledge, and the external and relational conditions (Context) under which they operate. First, nonlinear cognition is defined as an analytical, non-diagnostic concept referring to a mode of cognition capable of holding and processing multiple relations, premises, time horizons, and prospective consequences in parallel. Next, subjective distress is organized into four hypothetical analytical layers: Cognitive Incongruence Pain, Affective Resonance Pain, Anticipatory Load Pain, and Value Disruption Pain. It is positioned not as something that directly determines a cause, but as a structural signal for hypothetically decomposing possible misalignment.The paper further presents the YMCK model, which analyzes the relationships among Yardstick (Y), Metacognition (M), Cognition (C), and Knowledge (K) within Context. In YMCK, the unit of analysis is not the level of each element, but the configuration and interaction of [Y · M · C · K] within Context. Context is treated not as a fixed background but as a dynamic condition in which an individual's external expression may change surrounding evaluations, roles, support, evaluative criteria, and related conditions, which may recursively affect subsequent YMCK operation. The paper also examines the possibility that increases in K and the operation of M are not univocally protective, but may connect to new subjective load depending on the visibility of prospective consequences, self-monitoring, responsibility, capacity for intervention, and related conditions.The paper also treats budding, asynchronous development, and twice-exceptionality (2E) as mutually irreducible concepts, and in particular distinguishes 2E and asynchronous development as conditions themselves from the expressions of difficulty, subjective load, ability expression, and visibility or invisibility formed under those conditions. Accordingly, YMCK is not a model that explains the causes by which 2E or asynchronous development arises, nor one that eliminates those conditions through environmental adjustment. The purpose of the paper is not to reduce observed experiences and expressions to a single cause, but to decompose them into multiple competing relational hypotheses and make their condition dependence open to examination.The nonlinear cognition concept, four-layer structure of subjective distress, and YMCK presented in this paper are, at present, not standardized measurement scales or diagnostic/classification models, but exploratory analytical frameworks for decomposing and testing hypotheses. Future research should empirically examine, using multiple information sources and longitudinal data, agreement and disagreement between external expression and internal load, directions of M operation, dynamic Context, the emergence and sustainability of budding, and relationships between 2E/asynchronous development and expressions of difficulty. Cases inconsistent with the framework should also be examined actively; if nonlinear cognition or YMCK provides no additional analytical utility beyond existing concepts, the theory itself should be re-evaluated, including possible reconstruction.
