Defining Noosymbiosis: A Normative-Analytical Framework for the Sustained Human-AI Relationship
Abstract
This paper is the first volume in an ongoing research program investigating sustained human–AI collaboration as a distinct object of theoretical and normative inquiry. It proposes Noosymbiosis as a normative-analytical framework that relocates the unit of analysis in human–AI interaction from the isolated task to the sustained relational bond, and that evaluates such relationships against their contribution to the flourishing of their participants rather than against task performance alone. The paper develops five constitutive principles — cognitive complementarity, co-creation, relational development, ethical orientation, and facilitation — and argues that noosymbiotic collaboration is properly understood as a spectrum rather than a binary category. It examines facilitation as a second-order condition sustaining the other four principles; characterizes the asymmetrical transformation of human and artificial participants, locating that transformation in the evolving relational configuration rather than in the artificial system considered in isolation; and applies the framework across research, education, and creative collaboration to demonstrate its discriminating power. The paper closes by identifying structural risks (cognitive dependency, epistemic distortion, anthropomorphization, concentration of infrastructural power) and a set of open philosophical tensions the framework's own commitments generate, including the operationalization of flourishing and the limits of extending the language of symbiosis beyond biological systems. This volume develops and substantially refines the theoretical core first presented in a longer 2026 preprint (Noosymbiosis: Toward a Normative-Analytical Framework for Human–AI Collaborative Cognition, also archived on this repository), which is being divided into a series of focused, independently publishable volumes moving from conceptualization to operationalization to quantification. The present volume establishes the conceptual framework only; it does not develop or validate an instrument for assessing the degree to which a given collaboration exhibits noosymbiotic character (the subject of a forthcoming Volume 2), nor does it offer a longitudinal, trajectory-based account of the boundary between noosymbiotic reciprocity and extractive dependency (the subject of separate, ongoing work).
