Abstract

The Surah Map of the Qur’an is Volume III of The Qur’anic Coherence System and converts the method of Volume I and the macro-orientation of Volume II into a consistent reference architecture for all 114 surahs. Its central problem is comparability. Qur’anic studies often contain rich analyses of individual surahs, but the questions asked of one chapter are not always asked of another. Volume III therefore applies the same six-field dashboard across the entire muṣḥaf so that surahs can be studied individually without losing their place in the whole. Each profile begins with identity: Arabic and English name, Makki/Madani classification, commonly cited revelation position, ayah count, and macro-group placement. These fields are not as simple as a database may make them look. Classification traditions can differ; revelation-order lists are not uniform; verse counts vary according to recognized counting systems. The map therefore treats metadata as sourced information with variant-awareness rather than as unqualified numerical certainty. The interpretive fields are central burden (ʿamūd), placement logic, movement type, thematic connections, and reader transformation. The ʿamūd is not a one-line summary of every topic but a hypothesis about the governing burden served by the surah’s diverse sections. Placement logic asks what the surah receives from what precedes and what it prepares in what follows. Movement identifies how the discourse proceeds. Thematic connections record pairs, echoes, responses, recurring motifs and wider group relations. Transformation asks what kind of reorientation the ordered surah seeks from an attentive reader.
