Transdisciplinarity 3.x: A White Paper on Metatheory, Reflexivity, Developmental Capacity, Adaptive Leadership, Hybrid Cognition, and Innovation in a Complexity-Saturated Age

Abstract

This paper introduces Transdisciplinarity 3.x (TD 3.x) as an emerging next phase of transdisciplinary thought and practice for a complexity-saturated age. TD 3.x argues that complex problems require more than stakeholder inclusion, disciplinary boundary crossing, or procedural dialogue. They require stronger epistemic architecture, deeper reflexivity, greater realism about developmental unevenness, and a clearer understanding of adaptive challenges. The paper advances a metatheoretical approach grounded in the five dimensions of epistemology, ontology, axiology, praxis, and telos, while also incorporating a developmental lens, an adaptive leadership lens, and a model of hybrid human-AI cognition in which AI functions as part of an extended cognitive phenotype. It further links TD 3.x to the M3 Innovation Topology, showing how stronger epistemic design can support innovation across levels and loci. Finally, the paper proposes a multi-layered evaluative approach, combining rubrics with leading and lagging indicators to assess transdisciplinary quality and long-term developmental outcomes.
