The Correction Window Model: When Deliberation Becomes More Costly Than Correctable Error

Abstract

Decision advice often treats speed and accuracy as opposing virtues: acting early risks error, while waiting permits better judgment. Existing work on bounded rationality, metareasoning, value of information, and real options explains why additional thought can be costly and why waiting can be valuable when commitments are irreversible. Many practical decisions, however, combine a different set of dynamics. An action may initially be highly correctable, yet become harder to reverse as time passes; delay can impose opportunity costs; and action itself can generate feedback unavailable through further private deliberation. This paper proposes the Correction Window Model, a conceptual decision framework that integrates time-dependent delay cost, probability of error, remaining reversibility, correction cost, irreversible harm, and optional feedback value. The model defines a correction window as the interval in which reversibility remains above a chosen threshold and derives an action condition: further deliberation is justified only while its marginal reduction in expected error loss exceeds the marginal cost of delay, the expected loss caused by declining reversibility, and the value of feedback forfeited by waiting. The framework does not claim a universal law or originality for its individual components. Its contribution is an operational synthesis that makes explicit a possibility easily obscured in static comparisons: hesitation can increase the danger it is intended to prevent. Illustrative cases show how the model can support creative, product, and organizational decisions while recommending caution or redesign for high-consequence, weakly reversible choices.
