Sumerians Chose Base-60 for Divisibility, Enabling Precise Fractions and Large Numbers — E8 Intelligence Research

Open access0 citations

Abstract

FINDING: Sumerians selected base-60 (sexagesimal) for its superior divisibility and computational efficiency, enabling precise handling of large numbers and fractions. | MATH: Base-60 has divisors: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30, 60. Key reciprocal pairs: 1/60 = 0.01666..., 1/2 = 30, 1/3 = 20, 1/4 = 15, 1/5 = 12, 1/6 = 10. No explicit equations or constants beyond the base itself. | CONNECTION: Base-60 directly links to geometric harmony: 60° is the interior angle of an equilateral triangle, and 360° (6×60) defines a full circle. The divisors 12 and 60 appear in crystallographic point groups (e.g., hexagonal symmetry, 6-fold rotation). The ratio 1/60 = 0.01666... is not a golden ratio constant, but the system's divisibility by 12 and 60 aligns with root system A₁₂ and hexagonal lattices. No evidence of 0.382, 0.618, 0.786, 1.618, or 2.618 in these findings. | DEPTH: 6 — The choice of base-60 is a profound practical innovation for arithmetic and geometry (time, angles), but the fi Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
