Advancing modified epoxy asphalts from derived waste PET: effects of base asphalt types on fuel resistance joint sealant performance

Abstract

The performance and fuel resistance of modified epoxy asphalt with carboxyl-terminated poly(ethylene terephthalate) (CTPET) and amine hardeners were investigated. Three asphalt types, AC40/50 (40#), AC60/70 (60#), and a polymer-modified asphalt (M#) were chosen for an extensive comprehensive study. The morphology of the blends showed various sizes of asphalt domains in epoxy matrix related to types of asphalts. The increase of the glass transition temperature (Tg) was presented in the range of −4 oC to 2 oC. The rheological and adhesive properties of the modified epoxy asphalt products were depended on morphology and thermal behaviour. However, all samples exhibited similar fuel resistance, as indicated by weight losses of approximately 0.18%–0.25% after kerosene immersion at 80 °C. Among the formulations, M#-based epoxy asphalt (EM#) demonstrated superior rheological performance. Modified epoxy also enhanced Tg, elasticity, fuel resistance, and bonding performance of 40# and 60# to levels comparable to M#.
