A Conjecture of Matter:The Time Ticking Law——A Theoretical Framework on the Origin of Time
Abstract
Physics has described time in multiple ways but has never provided its origin. General relativity incorporates it into spacetime geometry, quantum mechanics treats it as an external parameter, and thermodynamics identifies it as the direction of irreversibility. These descriptions do not contradict one another, yet none answers the same question: where does time itself come from? This paper proposes a tentative answer: time is neither a pre-existing background nor a scale marked by the motion of matter. It is the product accumulated by the universe through repetitive events. Every complete cycle of closure leaves behind an irreversible residual, and the superposition of these residuals constitutes the entirety of time. The theory is grounded in a core observation: no system with a closed rhythm returns exactly to its initial state upon completing a full cycle. This "failure to return to origin"—the residual—is irreversible and is not canceled by subsequent cycles. It is absorbed by the system and becomes part of the initial condition for the next tick. Each tick superimposes a new residual upon those of previous cycles, forming a progressively accumulating, irreversible sequence. This cumulative sequence is time itself. Time is not a uniform flow; it is discrete, countable, and determined by history. It does not exist independently of matter; it is the total sum of irreversible traces left by matter through closed rhythms. This paper does not modify any known physical equations, introduce new physical constants, or aim to replace existing theories. It attempts to answer the question that existing theories have not asked: before the commencement of evolution, how was time itself established? The paper presents the core axioms, key definitions, intrinsic mechanisms, and the hierarchical relationship with existing physics. (This paper aims to provide a new idealized abstract model for the exploration of spacetime structure. This model is a natural philosophy conjecture of matter, and has not yet undergone independent experimental verification. It may therefore be revised or overturned by future rigorous testing. The author makes this conjecture publicly available and earnestly invites colleagues in physics and the philosophy of science to rigorously examine its logical coherence and physical reality.)
