PUH Theorem 337 (A Medium Cannot Outrun Itself) — Because c² = 60J/ρ Is Derived Rather Than Imposed, a Superluminal Metric Distortion Is a Superluminal Disturbance of the Lattice; the Surfer Analogy Misses the Claim and the Sound Analogy Meets It
Abstract
Photonic Universe Hypothesis (PUH) —WHAT THE WARP PROPOSAL ACTUALLY CLAIMS. It is commonly said that a warp drive would let a ship exceed the speed of light. IT WOULD NOT, and the distinction is the whole of what follows. In the Alcubierre construction the ship sits in a LOCALLY FLAT region and never moves superluminally with respect to its immediate surroundings. WHAT MOVES SUPERLUMINALLY IS THE DISTORTION — a region of curved geometry carried through the surrounding space. A framework wishing to forbid it must therefore say something about the distortion, not about the ship. THE ANALOGY THAT MISSES, AND THE ONE THAT MEETS. A natural first formulation is that light is a surfer on a wave and a surfer cannot outrun its own wave. THAT IS TRUE AND IT DOES NOT ENGAGE THE PROPOSAL, which never claims the surfer outruns anything — IT CLAIMS THE WAVE CAN BE MADE TO MOVE. The surfer analogy answers a question nobody asked. THE SOUND ANALOGY IS THE ACCURATE ONE: a region of steel cannot travel through steel faster than steel's sound speed, because THE MOVING IS THE PROPAGATING. A supersonic aircraft moves THROUGH air; it does not carry a parcel of air with it at supersonic speed relative to the air itself. WHY ORDINARY FIELD THEORY CANNOT ANSWER. In a conventional treatment the speed of light is INSERTED BY HAND, appearing in the field equations as a parameter rather than emerging from anything. Nothing in such a theory forbids a solution of those same equations carrying a region of geometry faster than the parameter — and such solutions are known to exist, which is precisely why the warp metric was constructible. Any prohibition must be IMPORTED: from energy conditions, from quantum backreaction, or from causality imposed separately. None of these is a statement about what light IS. THEOREM 337.1. The framework does not insert c. T320 derives it: c² = 60J/ρ, with J the bond stiffness, ρ the inertial density, and 60 the second moment of the root system — Σ_α α⊗α = 60·I exactly, the same 60 appearing as twice the dual Coxeter number in the Killing form. And T323 verified this returns the electromagnetic value exactly: c² = (κ²/μ₀)/(ε₀κ²) = 1/(ε₀μ₀) = (2.997925×10⁸ m/s)², with the arbitrary field normalisation κ CANCELLING from the ratio. IN THIS FRAMEWORK THE SPEED OF LIGHT IS NOT A LIMIT IMPOSED ON THE MEDIUM BUT A PROPERTY OF IT — standing to the substrate as the speed of sound stands to steel. RESULT 337.2. Two further results make the conclusion immediate. THE TENSION FIELD IS THE METRIC, established by T298 and T299 in reciprocal form (g₀₀ = −λ₀/λ, g_rr = +λ/λ₀), so a distortion of the geometry is a disturbance of the substrate rather than something happening to a passive stage. And a disturbance of a medium propagates at that medium's wave speed — not an additional postulate but what a wave speed MEANS. THEREFORE A REGION OF THE MEDIUM CANNOT BE CARRIED THROUGH THE MEDIUM FASTER THAN THE MEDIUM COMMUNICATES. This is not a prohibition added to the theory; it is what having a medium amounts to. The warp construction asks for a region of geometry to travel faster than geometry's own signal speed — and in a substrate theory, GEOMETRY IS THE SIGNAL. TWO GAPS, NAMED RATHER THAN GLOSSED. (a) THE NONLINEAR CASE HAS NOT BEEN CHECKED. The wave equation from which c is derived is LINEAR at the order computed, and linear equations have a fixed characteristic speed, so the conclusion holds at that order. But T321 established that the lattice must be ANHARMONIC, since a purely harmonic medium exhibits no nonlinear optics whatever and would predict zero vacuum birefringence. Nonlinear media support solitons and shocks whose propagation can differ from the linear characteristic speed, and whether the quartic term admits a superluminal structure has not been computed. (b) THE NEGATIVE-ENERGY QUESTION HAS NEVER BEEN ASKED. The warp geometry requires a region of negative energy density, and in 256 papers the framework has never addressed whether it admits one — a search of the archive returns only incidental occurrences. IF THE FRAMEWORK FORBIDS NEGATIVE ENERGY DENSITY, THE QUESTION NEVER ARISES, AND THAT IS PROBABLY THE SHORTER AND STRONGER ARGUMENT. It is named as the obvious successor. The honest position is that the argument is sound at linear order and incomplete beyond it, and that a more direct route exists which nobody has taken. KILL-CONDITIONS: (i) if the anharmonic term admits solitonic solutions propagating above the linear characteristic speed, Result 337.2 fails in that regime — not excluded; (ii) if the tension field is not the metric — the identification is POSITED rather than derived, as its own paper records — a metric distortion need not be a lattice disturbance and the second premise fails; (iii) if the lattice supports a second propagation mode with a higher characteristic speed, c is not the only signal speed and the conclusion applies only to the mode considered; (iv) if superluminal transport is achieved without the geometry moving — wormhole topology rather than metric distortion — this note does not address it. NOT CLAIMED: that superluminal travel has been proved impossible in general, since this is an argument within one framework about its own content; that the Alcubierre construction is inconsistent as a solution of the Einstein equations, WHICH IT IS NOT — the point is that this framework does not admit the equations in that form; that the nonlinear case has been examined; that the framework forbids negative energy density, never established either way; or that the linear derivation of c has been checked against the anharmonic correction.
