Geological Restitution Architecture: A Continental Framework for Post Extraction Repair in Africa

Abstract

Mining reshapes geological, hydrological, chemical, and structural systems in ways that persist for decades beyond the life of a mine. Yet no mining jurisdiction—globally or within Africa—has established a scientifically defensible standard for repairing the deep structural impacts of extraction. Existing closure plans focus on surface rehabilitation rather than restoring subsurface stability, hydrological coherence, tailings chemistry, or long‑term community safety. This journal introduces Geological Restitution Standards for Mining (GRSM), the first engineering‑grade framework designed specifically for post‑extraction repair. Built on the Geological Restitution Methodology (GRM‑Mining) and the Geological Restitution Architecture (GRA‑Mining), the journal defines a complete system for: baseline reconstruction of pre‑mining geology and hydrology disturbance quantification (voids, strata disruption, tailings chemistry, AMD potential) basin‑scale risk surface modelling (subsidence, seismicity, plume migration, slope instability) restitution design (geomorphology, mineral balance, mass/volume restitution, structural stability) implementation protocols for engineered backfill, aquifer rehydration, tailings detoxification, and AMD neutralisation long‑term monitoring and compliance mining restitution certification through the GRI‑Mining index The journal also presents mining‑specific case studies from the Witwatersrand goldfields, the Copperbelt, the Mpumalanga coalfields, and the Bushveld platinum belt, demonstrating how GRSM transforms legacy mining environments into structurally stable, chemically coherent, and hydrologically functional systems. By establishing geological restitution as a new discipline within mining engineering and environmental governance, this work provides regulators, basin authorities, mining houses, and scientific institutions with the first unified standard for post‑extraction repair. Africa now has the framework to lead globally in mining restitution.
