What's Happening in Medical Drones, Globally, and Where India Stands: A technical status report on medical drone logistics, clinical supply-chain integration and the transition from pilots to health-system infrastructure

Abstract

This article provides an evidence-informed global status report on medical drone logistics in 2026, examining the transition of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) from pilot demonstrations to clinically governed healthcare logistics infrastructure. It maps current international activity across partnerships, projects, funding, emerging ventures, research evidence and regulation. The analysis covers national public-health logistics models in Africa; hospital-to-hospital pathology and urgent-supply corridors in the United Kingdom; direct-to-patient prescription delivery models in the United States; emerging programmes in Ireland, the Middle East and China; and the development of risk-based BVLOS regulatory pathways in Brazil. The article then assesses India’s strategic position. It reviews the country’s regulatory environment, ICMR i-DRONE evidence, state-led pilots, domestic operator ecosystem, geographic and public-health needs, manufacturing capacity and key governance gaps. It argues that India’s next step should not be additional isolated demonstrations, but the development of an outcome-based, nationally coordinated medical-drone logistics framework integrating public procurement, BVLOS operations, unmanned traffic management, clinical governance, quality assurance and health-technology assessment. The paper is intended for health-system leaders, policymakers, healthcare providers, researchers, UAS operators, logistics organisations, digital-health practitioners and investors working at the intersection of health access, clinical supply chains and aviation innovation.
