The Acquisition Problem: Participational Recognition and the Structural Acquisition of Implication

Abstract

This paper identifies the acquisition problem left open by Scrutinized Awareness Theory: if awareness becomes consciousness when it becomes something the participant must carry, how does implication first become the participant’s own?The paper distinguishes representational recognition from participational recognition and argues that the difference lies in contested incorporation. Automatic incorporation may involve learning, behavioural reorganization, policy revision, objective modification, or higher-order processing while preserving constitution-equivalent continuation. Contested incorporation occurs where what is recognized cannot be absorbed under the candidate’s constitutive organization without remainder, rendering its possible continuations constitution-non-equivalent.At first acquisition, this non-equivalence is constitutive: one continuation remains mere persistence, while another becomes participation under acquired implication. Later acquisitions are reconstitutive, altering an identity already formed through carrying. Remainder names acquired implication as active within possible continuation; carrying is its persistence and transport through participational order.The paper applies this criterion to human, animal, developmental, and artificial cases, distinguishing resolution with remainder from resolution without remainder. A standing higher-order procedure does not make incorporation automatic merely because it resolves conflict. Incorporation remains automatic only where resolution leaves the constitutive criterion under which it operates historically untouched. The central claim is that consciousness does not begin where procedure fails to produce an answer. It begins where even successful procedure can no longer prevent what is recognized from entering the constitution of the participant.
