Freedom Without Blueprints: The Intrinsic Limitation of Social Schemes in Lao-Zhuang Philosophy and the Austrian School

Abstract

Most comparative studies between Daoist thought and the Austrian School remain superficial, confined to listing vague similarities of "anti‑intervention" and "advocating freedom". Existing scholarship has consistently missed the most essential, paradigm‑defining consensus shared by Lao‑Zhuang philosophy and Austrian economics: both schools deliberately and fundamentally reject any form of holistic social blueprint and top‑down social engineering. Unlike constructivist ideologies that obsess over designing perfect institutional schemes, ultimate social models, and centralized transformation plans, neither Lao‑Zhuang nor the Austrian School attempts to offer a prescriptive solution for remaking society. This absence of grand social design is not a theoretical deficiency, nor an oversight; it is their core philosophical essence. Scholars have long noted that the Austrian School deliberately avoids offering holistic social blueprints. What this paper newly demonstrates, however, is that this "anti‑blueprint paradigm" is not merely a unique feature of modern liberal thought. It constitutes a cross‑civilizational intellectual isomorphism that was independently arrived at by pre‑Qin Lao‑Zhuang political philosophy two thousand years earlier. Following the ancient Chinese wisdom of "governing by non‑action" and the modern Austrian doctrine of spontaneous order, this paper argues a revolutionary proposition largely ignored by mainstream academia: For the most profound social thought systems, refusing to provide artificial social schemes is itself the supreme social scheme. Non‑action is not passivity; it is the highest form of effective governance. This article dismantles the century‑long misunderstanding that the Austrian School lacks practical social solutions. Its so‑called "blankness in institutional design" is intentional: it rejects the rational arrogance of remodeling complex social systems through human blueprints. This cross‑civilizational resonance between ancient Eastern inaction and modern Western spontaneous order reveals the fatal flaw of all constructivist social theories: man cannot design a better society than the one evolved by free, spontaneous individual interaction.
