HOMOEOPATHIC MANAGEMENT OF ALLERGIC RHINITIS: A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW

Abstract

Background: Allergic rhinitis is a common immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated inflammatory disorder of the nasal mucosa characterized by sneezing, rhinorrhoea, nasal obstruction, and itching. It affects individuals of all age groups and has a significant impact on quality of life, daily activities, sleep, and work productivity. Although conventional treatment provides symptomatic relief, recurrence of symptoms and long-term medication use remain important concerns for many patients. Objective: To review the current understanding of allergic rhinitis and discuss the role of homoeopathic management based on classical principles, available literature, and commonly indicated medicines. Methods: A comprehensive narrative review was prepared using standard medical textbooks, homoeopathic literature, peer-reviewed journal articles, and published evidence related to allergic rhinitis and its homoeopathic management. Results: Allergic rhinitis is a multifactorial disease influenced by genetic susceptibility and environmental allergens. Early diagnosis, allergen avoidance, patient education, and appropriate treatment are essential for effective disease control. Homoeopathy adopts an individualized approach, selecting medicines according to the totality of symptoms. Frequently indicated medicines include Allium cepa, Sabadilla, Arsenicum album, Natrum muriaticum, Wyethia helenoides, and Arundo mauritanica. Published literature suggests that homoeopathy may provide symptomatic relief and improve overall quality of life in selected patients; however, further high-quality clinical studies are required to strengthen the available evidence. Conclusion: Homoeopathy may serve as a complementary therapeutic approach in the management of allergic rhinitis through individualized treatment. Well-designed clinical trials are needed to establish its long-term effectiveness and clinical applicability.
