International Overdose Awareness Day 2026: Evidence-Based Priorities for Drug Overdose Prevention and Response

Open access0 citations

Abstract

International Overdose Awareness Day, observed annually on 31 August, marks its 25th year in 2026 under the theme “25 Years On. Still Needed.” This Guest Editorial examines overdose as a preventable toxicological emergency and considers the contemporary relevance of Agadatantra, the Ayurvedic discipline of toxicology. Evidence supports rapid recognition of opioid overdose, basic life support, timely naloxone, access to medications for opioid use disorder, and stigma-free continuity of care. The contribution of Ayurveda should not be framed as a replacement for emergency toxicology; rather, Agadatantra can strengthen toxicological vigilance, medication-history taking, awareness of drug interactions, community education, pharmacovigilance and timely referral. In India, where opioid use and treatment need are substantial, Ayurveda institutions and practitioners can contribute meaningfully by integrating overdose literacy with compassionate, evidence-based interdisciplinary care. The central message is simple: remembrance must lead to action, and no preventable overdose death should be accepted as inevitable.
