Role of Takra Basti in the Management of Kaphaja Grahani: A Case Report
Abstract
Introduction: Hurry and worry are leading to numerous lifestyle diseases. The root cause of nearly all diseases can be traced back to dietary habits.Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic functional gastrointestinal disorder defined by the Rome IV criteria as recurrent abdominal pain associated with defecation or a change in bowel habits, including diarrhea, constipation, or mixed patterns, alongside abdominal bloating and tenesmus. As a disorder of gut-brain interaction, IBS affects approximately 10-15% of the global population and is associated with substantial impairment in health-related quality of life, increased healthcare utilization, and psychological comorbidity. In Ayurveda, IBS symptoms demonstrate significant clinical correspondence with Grahani (~Malabsorption syndrome).Grahani Roga is primarily attributed to Agni Dushti (~derangement of digestive-metabolic fire), resulting in Ama (~metabolic toxin) formation, malabsorption, and Mala Pravritti Vaishamya (~irregular bowel evacuation). Objective: The study is aimed to determine the effect of Takra Basti (~Medicated buttermilk enema) and Pippalyadi Anuvasana Basti (~enema with Pippalyadi Taila) in Grahani.Method: A 30-year-old male patient presented with complaints of mucus discharge while passing stool, abdominal pain, bloating after food consumption, and tenesmus. The condition was diagnosed as Kaphaja Grahani and managed with Ayurvedic medicines and Panchakarma (~five internal biocleansing therapies). Results: The complaints were significantly reduced after 6 months of treatment. Conclusion: Based on the observations, it can be said that Panchakarma treatment can be beneficial in treating IBS.
