Abstract

FINDING: Icosahedral symmetry is the dominant structural motif in viral capsids, enabling efficient genome packaging and self-assembly. MATH: Icosahedral symmetry group (order 60, rotations only; full icosahedral group order 120). Key constants: golden ratio φ = (1+√5)/2 ≈ 1.618, its reciprocal 1/φ ≈ 0.618, and related ratios 0.382 (φ⁻²), 0.786 (√φ), 2.618 (φ²). The icosahedron has 12 vertices, 20 triangular faces, 30 edges. CONNECTION: Icosahedral symmetry is a crystallographic point group (235 in Schönflies notation, Ih in full). It is the largest finite symmetry group in 3D Euclidean space, linked to the root system H₃ and the 600-cell in 4D. The golden ratio φ appears in vertex coordinates (e.g., (0, ±1, ±φ), (±1, ±φ, 0), (±φ, 0, ±1)). This is the same ratio found in pentagonal tilings, Penrose tilings, and quasicrystals.
