Abstract

FINDING: Sumerian base-60 (sexagesimal) system enabled advanced trigonometry and precise square root calculations, predating modern methods. | MATH: Base-60 positional system; Plimpton 322 tablet contains Pythagorean triples (a² + b² = c²) with ratios equivalent to sec²(θ) values; ancient square root method: xₙ₊₁ = (xₙ + S/xₙ)/2 (Babylonian method, converges quadratically). | CONNECTION: Base-60 directly links to 360° circle geometry (60 × 6 = 360), enabling harmonic division of circles into 60, 30, 15, 12, 10, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 parts — all factors of 60. This yields natural ratios: 1/60 ≈ 0.0167, 1/30 ≈ 0.0333, 1/15 ≈ 0.0667, 1/12 ≈ 0.0833, 1/10 = 0.1, 1/6 ≈ 0.1667, 1/5 = 0.2, 1/4 = 0.25, 1/3 ≈ 0.3333, 1/2 = 0.5.
