The Executive Access Model (EAM): A Classroom Framework for Understanding Variability in Student Performance
Abstract
The Executive Access Model (EAM) is an applied instructional framework that translates a constraint based control architecture of human functioning into observable classroom practice. It explains variability in student performance as changes in executive access, defined as the moment to moment ability to initiate, sustain, shift, manage cognitive load, and regulate under classroom demands, rather than deficits in skill, motivation, or ability. The model organizes executive functioning into five domains: Activation, Persistence, Switching (Cognitive Flexibility), Cognitive Load and Working Memory, and Threat and Regulation. Within each domain, EAM identifies observable classroom patterns, provides operational definitions, and aligns them with targeted instructional supports. The framework is designed for use across general and special education settings, aligns with Multi Tiered Systems of Support, and emphasizes real time instructional adjustment based on observable changes in access. By shifting the central instructional question from “Why won’t this student do the work?” to “What is interfering with access right now?”, the model supports more precise and consistent responses to learning barriers. This work presents the framework, domain structure, pattern classifications, and implementation procedures for classroom use.
