The School of Answers: Education, Conceptual Flattening, and the Formation of Differentiated Judgment.

Abstract

A school can transmit large amounts of correct information while leaving underdeveloped the capacities by which a person learns what to ask, how to inquire, what kind of evidence can answer a question, and where the authority of an answer ends. This article develops a philosophical account of that possibility. It does not argue that contemporary schooling everywhere is reducible to memorization, testing, or measurement, nor that formal assessment is intrinsically distortive. It identifies a structural tendency that can arise whenever finished answers, grades, rubrics, rankings, learning outcomes, or other educational forms become sufficient for judgment while the questions, methods, conditions, and limits from which they derive lose salience.I call the resulting educational condition conceptual flattening. The term extends an earlier account of conceptual compression and social reinforcement, while the distinction between abstraction, formalization, scope, and end is drawn from Differentiated Realism. In education, the relevant failure is not simplification itself. Curricula must select, examinations must delimit, and grades must compress. The failure appears when a form useful for one educational task acquires authority over a deeper or different question: when a score becomes a judgment of intelligence, when a rubric becomes the meaning of good work, when success on an assessment reorganizes the purpose of teaching, or when the possession of an answer is treated as equivalent to understanding how the answer is warranted.The constructive proposal is differentiated judgment: the capacity to distinguish kinds of questions, methods, evidence, representations, standards, and ends, and to relate each to the range within which it is warranted. This aim is placed in dialogue with traditions of inquiry, critical thinking, epistemic cognition, formative assessment, and critiques of educational measurement. The article then proposes practical curricular and pedagogical reforms: explicit education in question formation; a course in reasoning, evidence, and judgment; cross-disciplinary comparison of methods of knowing; representation and measurement literacy; structured opportunities for revision; and assessment that rewards warranted inquiry as well as correct output. In an environment increasingly populated by generative AI and inexpensive answers, the ability to judge what an answer answers, why it deserves assent, and what it leaves unresolved becomes a central educational task.
