Crystalline Information: Information as Ontological Structure
Abstract
Information is ordinarily said to be in things: contained in books, carried by signals, stored in memories. This paper argues that the metaphor conceals a substantive error. In the ontological register — concerned not with how messages travel but with how a domain becomes articulated in the first place — information is not content placed inside an object but the measured architecture of distinctions through which the object becomes determinate. The formal basis is Measured Rendition Theory (MRT). Over a finite measured space of possibilities, domain-supplied requirement families generate least admissible partitions; the corresponding measured renditions form a finite refinement-ordered crystal; and ambient joins supply canonical common refinements without requiring those joins to be selected as levels. The crystal induces a multi-level address architecture with formal and realized address spaces whose possible discrepancy is the defect. The paper interprets this object ontologically, introduces Crystalline theoretics as the broader theoretical programme organized around its architecture, and develops structural informationism, according to which information in the ontological register consists in a domain-instantiated measured distinction architecture rather than in any scalar quantity assigned to that architecture alone. Intrinsic articulations sustained by a domain are distinguished from merely interpretive partitions defined over it; the Newman triviality objection is addressed by reversing the direction of explanation from abstract structure to generated structure over a specified substrate; and accounts of epistemic position, navigation, genesis,persistence, and dissolution are developed without adding formal apparatus beyond MRT. The universality claim is layered. Distinction is required for addressability at a resolution, whereas measure and crystallization remain abductive, defeasible, and graded. Reflections across built environments, cognition, language, institutions,ecology, and compilation test the framework’s reach. Independent traditions repeatedly approach related architectures from different starting points and, in the present survey, recurrently stop at two junctions. One concerns the grounding of the substrate of possibility; the other concerns the generation of the distinctions a domain sustains. None of the framework’s components is unprecedented. Their integration into one generated, measured, multi-level, potentially defect-bearing address architecture is the proposal. The paper closes by separating crystallization from semantic significance and identifying open problems concerning dynamics, signatures, measure availability, boundary identification, and misrepresentation.
