Herpetofauna in Southern Philippine Indigenous Mythology
Open access0 citations
Abstract
The indigenous tribes of the Southern Philippines, whose members refer to themselves as Lumad, still preserve their animistic beliefs, traditions, and rituals. During numerous expeditions and research field trips to remote parts of the island of Mindanao, my collaboration with the indigenous people provided me with the opportunity to peer behind the veil shrouding their ancient myths and legends. Since Mindanao is characterised by a high level of biodiversity of herpetofauna, it is no wonder that reptiles and amphibians have played an important and irreplaceable role in the spiritual life of its indigenous inhabitants since time immemorial.
