HEDII and LESS: Heuristic Error Drift and the Sociology of Low-Energy Stabilization

Abstract

This Perspective proposes a systems sociology explanation for the persistence of durable social hierarchies — including racism, sexism, and other forms of categorical stratification — under conditions of material abundance. Building on ESC/HSC (Live→Belong→Gather→See), HBC (PDS→SDP→ERS), and NBSLP, we introduce: HEDII = Heuristic Error Drift Induction: when Stage 2 (Belong) and Stage 3 (Gather) are enclosed, PDS fires, Stage 4 (See) goes offline, and social information is sampled selectively toward threat-confirming exemplars. HEDS = Stabilization: repeated SDP (hoarding/defending) is encoded into institutional memory, habitus, and policy (social closure becoming doxa). LESS = Low-Energy Stabilizing Systems, operationalized as Low-Cost Emplaced Support: a low-cost, non-bureaucratic intervention installed at the PDS/SDP interface that restores Live/Belong/Gather/See without triggering further defense. Translates to established constructs: social closure (Weber/Parkin), habitus/symbolic violence (Bourdieu), system justification (Jost), social identity threat (Tajfel/Turner), institutional isomorphism (DiMaggio/Powell).
