The Class Structure of Safety Nets and Weaponized Victimhood: Epistemic Insulation and the Theft of Moral Capital in Elite Discourses

Abstract

This paper critically examines a growing paradox within modern meritocratic legal and political systems: the co-optation of the language of marginalization by structural elites who possess near-absolute infrastructural safety. While classical sociology focused on the distribution of material and political capital, this study posits the concept of Moral Capital Extraction—a phenomenonwherein insulated elites appropriate the rhetoric of trauma, vulnerability, and victimhood toinsulate themselves from public accountability and democratic oversight. By distinguishingbetween Control Anxiety (the distress arising from the remaining 0.01% unpredictability withinhyper-regulated environments) and Survival Terror (the existential trauma experienced understructural violence and domestic horror), we expose the mechanism of Epistemic Insulation. Weargue that the conflation of these two distinct emotional realities results in the theft of the victim'ssole remaining leverage: the moral language required to name genuine oppression.
