ASSESSING THE INFLUENCE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ON PASTORAL MINISTRY AND MINISTERIAL PROFESSIONALISM
Abstract
The technological era, which has led to the emergence of Artificial Intelligence, has brought a significant shift to contemporary society. AI has altered numerous operations and activities, and its influence is being felt across sectors such as business, governance, education, healthcare, and religion. Recently, pastoral ministry has witnessed an increase in the deployment of AI tools for some pastoral responsibilities once traditionally carried out directly by pastors, such as administrative management, pastoral communication, sermon preparation, digital evangelism, discipleship, and leadership development. Admittedly, the rapid adoption of AI tools offers opportunities to enhance ministerial effectiveness and professional competence. It must, however, be noted that they also raise critical concerns regarding pastoral authenticity, ethical responsibility, ministerial presence, and professional integrity. The research employs a descriptive method, and the study primarily anchors on the Technological Acceptance Model (TAM), with brief support from the Diffusion of Innovation Theory (DIT) and Osmer’s Practical Theory. The study argues that AI’s contributions to administrative efficiency, leadership effectiveness, knowledge acquisition, and ministry outreach are significant. However, overdependence on this technological tool presents some ministerial and professional concerns. The study submits that AI should be viewed as a complementary tool that enhances pastoral leadership and ministerial responsibilities rather than replacing them. It recommends developing theological and ethical guidelines for AI integration, providing AI literacy training for clergy, and incorporating emerging technologies into ministerial formation programmes.
