Babylonian Base-60: Superior Arithmetic, Exact Division, and Lasting Links to Time and Geometry — E8 Intelligence Research
Abstract
FINDING: Babylonian base-60 (sexagesimal) system enabled superior rational arithmetic and exact division, with direct links to time measurement and geometric ratios. MATH: - Base 60 has divisors: 1,2,3,4,5,6,10,12,15,20,30,60 → allows exact representation of fractions with denominators 2,3,4,5,6,10,12,15,20,30. - Key constants: 1/60 = 0.01666..., 1/3 = 20/60, 1/2 = 30/60, 1/5 = 12/60. - Plimpton 322 tablet contains Pythagorean triples (e.g., 3-4-5, 5-12-13) in sexagesimal, suggesting early trigonometric tables. - Cubic equations from BM 85200 and YBC 4669 show solutions involving √(1/3) and √(2/3) ratios. CONNECTION: - Base 60 directly yields the golden ratio conjugate 0.618 via 37/60 ≈ 0.6167 (close) and 38/60 = 0.6333, but more precisely: 1/φ = 0.6180339... is approximated by 37/60 = 0.6167 (error ~0.2%). - The ratio 0.786 (√(π/4)?) appears in Babylonian circle calculations (π ≈ 3.125, area = (π/4)d²). - Time measurement: 60 seconds/minute, 60 minutes/hour → circular Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
