What Will It Be Like When AI Becomes Second Nature?

Abstract

Artificial intelligence is moving from an occasional instrument toward an ambient layer of capability available through objects people carry, wear, inhabit, and encounter. Under present trajectories—not as an inevitable, uniform, or necessarily benign future—AI may become available on demand like a utility while remaining unlike a passive utility: it interprets situations, frames options, predicts, personalizes, presents itself relationally, and can act under delegated permission. This paper asks what life may be like when such participation becomes second nature: an acquired practical normality that is recurrent and increasingly assumed by its setting. AI's identification with mind is not only user-side anthropomorphism. It also has a neuro-inspired intellectual lineage and is deliberately anthropomimetic in presentation. Neither lineage establishes consciousness, biological identity, neuromorphic hardware in the strict engineering sense, or human equivalence. AI can extend thought, experience, and action; scaffold or substitute for capability; mirror selected features of human first nature; multiply reach through bounded digital representatives; and support new creative forms. Development must therefore remain central. Performance, accomplishment, learning, transfer, retention, functioning, burden, and viable nonuse are separate outcomes, never one score. A person remains outside every model made about them. The paper introduces Developmental Object AI Engineering (DOAIE) as a proposed values-based, human-at-the-origin stance organized around seven provisional values. A General Use Persistent AI Developmental Object (GUPAIDO) appears only as a public concept for persistent assistance governed by these distinctions. The paper also considers the hyperinterface, ambient and brain–computer interfaces, nested perturbation, attachment-relevant conduct, capture without captivity, hybrid creativity, and bounded longitudinal care. AI as second nature should mean neither invisible dependence nor technological fate, but a revisable extension answerable to human-authored purposes, permission, correction, refusal, and return to the world. Version 0.5 adds the mirrored-and-multiplied account of AI as second nature, grounded conceptually in Baby's First Self and Creating an Effective Swarm of Digital Twins, while preserving the non-equivalences among a person, a computational mirror, a functional twin, delegated action, synchronization, information, and experience.
