K Index: A Self-Regulation Protocol for the Calibration of Personal Discourse
Abstract
This article presents the K Index, a minimalist conceptual model that formalizes the relationship between the justification underlying an opinion and the degree of conviction with which it is expressed. Defined as the ratio K = μ / S, the framework functions as a metacognitive “checkpoint” that encourages individuals to consciously calibrate their declared certainty (S) in relation to the strength of their justificatory basis (μ). It is argued that the practice of seeking K ≥ 1 constitutes an exercise in personal epistemic responsibility, applicable to any individual and across any domain of knowledge. The protocol serves as a practical barrier against overconfidence bias, making it more difficult for individuals to deceive themselves regarding the strength of their own convictions and promoting a more coherent and well-grounded internal discourse. Importantly, the K Index is not intended to determine the truth of factual claims, but rather to calibrate personal discourse.
