Paying for Pressure: How Hypertension Costs Push Mindanao’s Families Into Poverty

Abstract

We commend Aduo-Adjei et al1 for their important contribution, “The Impoverishment Effect of Out-of-Pocket Expenditure for Hypertension in Ghana.” Their analysis demonstrates that out-of-pocket (OOP) payments for hypertension care increased the poverty headcount by 3.14% at the US$2.15/day poverty threshold and significantly widened the poverty gap. The study provides compelling empirical evidence that chronic disease expenditures can push households deeper into extreme poverty, even in the presence of national health insurance.
