Choreographic Leadership Competencies in AI-Integrated Practice: Toward an Exploratory Conceptual Framework

Abstract

As artificial intelligence (AI) systems become increasingly embedded in movement generation and aesthetic decision-making processes, the choreographer’s role in dance performance becomes more complex. This study examines how choreographic leadership can be reconsidered when nonhuman agents participate in AI-integrated choreographic practice. Drawing on Wayne McGregor’s Living Archive project and Youngcheol Lee’s Physical Thinking + AI, the study proposes five choreographic leadership competencies as part of an exploratory conceptual framework. The findings suggest that AI integration positions the choreographer as a mediating agent who translates distributed creative inputs into a performable artistic form.
