The Causal Fold: A Scoring Protocol and Four Worked Cases

Abstract

The Fold Against the Null established that sentiment-based measurement sees a story's settling tail, not its causal fold, leaving the parent model's central claim, that the space of narrative possibility closes near the golden section, untested at the observable it actually names. This paper supplies the missing instrument: a scoring rubric that identifies causally load-bearing events by two explicit tests, a per-work null derived from order statistics rather than simulation, and a first application to four canonical dramas. Under the rubric, an event is a new cause only if removing it would eliminate an ending the story could otherwise reach, and only if it was unestablished before its arrival; confirmations, executions of established intentions, revelations of latent fact, and portents do not qualify. If a work's k new causes were placed at random, the expected position of the last is k/(k+1), between 0.80 and 0.86 for the works scored here, and the probability that all fall at or before an observed position x is xᵏ. Measured against this null: Julius Caesar folds at 0.55, Macbeth at 0.64, Oedipus Tyrannus at 0.67, and Hamlet at 0.80, a mean of 0.67 against a mean null expectation of 0.82, with a Fisher combination across the four of p ≈ 0.058, suggestive at four works, decisive at neither. Three of four folds bracket the predicted 0.618; the fourth, Hamlet, sits at its null and its two post-fold causes, the pirate rescue and the poison-plot, are precisely the passages four centuries of criticism have called contrived, an unplanned corroboration of the parent model's deus-ex-machina prediction. In every work with both measurements, the causal fold precedes the affective tail by 15 to 42 points of span, the two instruments diverging in exactly the direction the theory requires. A pre-registration protocol for scaling to a decisive corpus closes the paper.
