Hawking Radiation and Impermanence: 3 Ways Modern Physics Confirms What Ancient Wisdom Always Knew

Abstract

This article examines three specific convergences between modern theoretical physics and ancient wisdom traditions on the nature of impermanence, emptiness, and information preservation. Convergence 1 (Hawking Radiation and Anicca): Hawking S (1974, Nature 248:30) derived that black holes emit thermal radiation at temperature T_H = ħc³/8πGMk_B, and that this radiation causes eventual black hole evaporation. Evaporation time: t_evap ≈ 5120πG²M³/ħc´. Bekenstein-Hawking entropy: S_BH = kA/4l_P² (proportional to horizon area, not volume). Laboratory confirmation: Steinhauer J (2016, Nature Physics): acoustic analogue of Hawking radiation confirmed in laboratory sonic black hole. This is the physics confirmation of: Buddhist Anicca (Pali: ‘Sabbe sankhara anicca’ — all conditioned formations are impermanent); Vedanta’s Maya (the appearance of permanence is the fundamental illusion); Jain Paryaya (modes are impermanent while substance transforms); Hindu Pralaya (even the universe has cycles of creation and dissolution). Convergence 2 (Quantum Vacuum and Sunyata): Hawking radiation arises from virtual particle-antiparticle pairs at the event horizon; the vacuum is not empty but contains zero-point energy (ℏω/2 per mode); Casimir effect (Lamoreaux 1997; Mohideen & Roy 1998): confirmed vacuum energy between parallel plates; quantum vacuum energy density: approximately 10¹¹³ J/m³ (Planck scale). This parallels: Buddhist Sunyata — not nihilistic void but ‘emptiness of inherent existence’ containing all potential (Nagarjuna, Mulamadhyamakakarika, c.150 CE); Heart Sutra: ‘rupa is sunyata; sunyata is rupa’; Vedantic Brahman as the formless ground of all manifest reality; Nasadiya Sukta (Rigveda 10.129): neither being nor non-being at the origin. Convergence 3 (Information Paradox and Karma): Hawking’s original claim (1975): information is destroyed in black hole evaporation, violating quantum unitarity. The resolution: Page curve (Page D, 1993); Penington (2019); Almheiri, Engelhardt, Marolf, Maxfield (2019): island formula in AdS/CFT shows information is preserved; ER=EPR (Maldacena & Susskind 2013): spacetime connectivity = quantum entanglement = information preservation at the boundary. Hawking conceded in 2004. Physics conclusion: information is preserved through the most extreme physical transformation. This parallels: Buddhist Pratityasamutpada (dependent origination: no event is truly destroyed, only transformed into new conditions); Vedantic karma (action leaves impressions/Samskaras that shape future arising without being destroyed); Jain karma (karmic particles as substantive information carriers that persist through transformation). Additional physics-philosophy connections: Bohr, Heisenberg, Wheeler on quantum mechanics and consciousness; David Bohm’s implicate order; John Wheeler’s participatory universe.
