THE ROLE OF THE CHURCH IN ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGES OF ECONOMIC MELTDOWN IN NIGERIA

Open access0 citations

Abstract

Nigeria is currently grappling with severe economic challenges. Many households struggle to afford three meals a day, and a growing number of citizens eat merely what is available rather than what they desire due to limited resources. The unemployment rate continues to rise, and the nation’s middle class is gradually disappearing. This paper examines the role of the Church (the assembly of believers) in responding to Nigeria’s economic meltdown. Employing historical and phenomenological methods, the study reveals that the Church can make meaningful contributions through spiritual guidance, social welfare support, economic empowerment, education, human development, and advocacy for good governance. The paper concludes that with adequate support from its members, the Church possesses the potential to play a significant role in Nigeria’s economic recovery.
