Optimized Extraction of Beneficial Fatty Acid from Fresh Water Algae

Abstract

AbstractAlgae is a promising source of beneficial fatty acids like triacylglycerols (TAGS), polyunsaturated fattyacids (PUFAS) such as omega 3 fatty acids, omega 9 fatty acids, oleic acid, DHA, EHA, linoleic acid and palmitic acidoffering significant benefits over conventional fish source. The study focuses on the fatty acid profile of fresh wateralgae analyzed using gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy. Examination of best solvent extraction methodforhigh quality lipids were studied. Optimization for higher growth yield and lipid content using Response SurfaceMethodology (RSM), Box-Behnkendesign (BBD) considering factors such as pH, temperature, light intensity anddark and light cycle. Fresh water algae are an efficient, ecofriendly and cost-effective source yielding high value lipidssupporting their application nutraceutical, pharmaceutical and food industries. The future insights directed towardsfunctional drugs or capsule formulation and nutritional additives.
